The Chaldeans were a Semitic-speaking tribe known for their diplomacy and opportunism. They migrated to southern Mesopotamia and formed a coalition of tribes. They rose to power by taking advantage of Babylon's weakness and engaged in conflicts with the Assyrians. Under King Nebuchadnezzar II, they expanded their empire significantly, including the conquest of Jerusalem. However, their empire eventually declined and was conquered by Cyrus II of Persia. Over time, the Chaldeans assimilated into Babylonian culture, and their identity shifted to being associated with astrology and witchcraft.
