Belarusian Olympic athlete Cristina Simanouskaya arrived in Japan to fly to Poland after her team tried to force her back to Belarus following her criticism of her coaches. Fearing for her life due to the political repression in Belarus, she avoided speaking to the press. Simanouskaya was among over 2,000 Belarusian sports figures who signed a letter demanding new elections and the release of political prisoners. Her husband fled to Ukraine, and they plan to reunite in Poland. The Belarusian Olympic Committee, led by the president's son, claimed she was suspended for emotional and psychological reasons. Simanouskaya sought asylum at the Polish embassy after seeking help from Japanese authorities and the International Olympic Committee.
