The Sham Prince of Poyais and his Imaginary Kingdom

Gregor McGregor, a British officer, spent years in Central America before returning to Britain with tales of a fictional colony called Poyais. He recruited 250 settlers, promising them opportunities in the New World. However, the settlers found themselves abandoned in a barren jungle, as Poyais was entirely fabricated. Only 50 returned to Britain alive. McGregor claimed he was defrauded and continued his deceit in France, Spain, and London, never facing conviction.
