KEVIN: I came here just after my 23rd birthday, so that was about four years ago. I remember, it was a hot day in July and I was trying to carry everything across London, on the Underground in London. It was horrible!
SAMANTHA: My sister moved here about three years ago, and I visited her a few times and then moved here myself about eight months ago. I stayed with her for about two months and then got my own place.

[Why did you decide to move here?]

KEVIN: For a girl! I met her on a skiing holiday in Austria. She worked at an office in London. We were mad about each other! I quit my good job in the US and got a terrible job here. We broke up after a year, but by then I had grown to like London, so I stayed.
SAMANTHA: I was in a serious relationship back home. We’d been together for years, living together. But then we broke up and suddenly I had no home, no social life. My sister suggested moving here. It seemed a good way to make a new life, so I did.

[What do you like about London?]

KEVIN: There are people from all over the world here. It’s fascinating. I love to go to different parts of the city, listen to the strange music coming from the shops, and go to an international restaurant and try something that I can’t pronounce!
SAMANTHA: There are so many different events here. Ballet, theatre, arts projects, festivals, carnivals… you can see dance and music styles from all over the world. You can’t experience that back in my home town.

Who finds London expensive?

A. Kevin

B. Samantha

C. Both Kevin and Samantha

D. Neither Kevin nor Samantha

Answer explanation

[What do you dislike about it?]

KEVIN: Nothing. People say London is expensive, but I manage to live cheaply. I share a room with an Australian guy, I cycle everywhere, I buy cheap food and I get a lot of clothes and things for my flat free, because people are giving them away. People say there’s a lot of crime too, but I haven’t experienced anything myself – let’s hope that continues!
SAMANTHA: Well, I haven’t had any problems personally, but I guess I am always aware that this is a big city and crimes happen, so I’m never completely relaxed. Everything costs a fortune too: my accommodation, food, transport, bars, restaurants and events. I wish I earned more. Then I would be able to experience more that this city can offer.
