Treat the topic as a base-ten relationship, not just a digit-labeling exercise. Ask students to explain that 5 hundreds equals 50 tens or 500 ones, then connect those exchanges to decomposing, comparing, and calculating with multi-digit numbers.

Useful exercises include decomposing numbers in more than one way, matching standard and expanded forms, and comparing numbers by the value of their digits. A prompt such as “Write 634 using 5 hundreds” encourages students to regroup it as 5 hundreds, 13 tens, and 4 ones.
