37-43.

Pyrotechnician is the name for people who manufacture and use fireworks or any type of pyrotechnics like in the movies when something is blown up or ignited. Being a pyro technician requires a complete understanding of how chemicals and certain metals will react to each-other.

When you see the brilliant colors and light of fireworks bursting in the night sky you are observing a chemical reaction. The metals create the twinkle effect and the salts create the color. When you combine these metals and salts it produces a combination of sparkle and color!

Different types of salts can combine with metals to create different colors. Not all chemicals like salts burn the same color.

If you mix salts called strontiums (Sr) it will produce a yellow color. When you take a copper (Cu) metal and burn it will give you blue colors. Aluminum (Al) gives you white. Barium (Ba) will give you bright white! Powdered aluminum (Al) with an oxidizer, will create the loud bang or pop that you hear when the firework is ignited.

Safety is always important! These chemicals are highly reactive and should not be played with or experimented with if you are not properly trained.

When an athlete gets injured during a game they may use a cold pack. Inside the cold pack are 2 chemicals. When you break the plastic that separates them the chemicals mix. The chemical reaction takes up more energy than it gives off. This is because all chemical reactions absorb or release energy in an endothermic (Absorbs) or exothermic (releases) reaction.
