Reviewing for the first Biology Test - Unit 1 #GoBioRams
2
Vocabulary you need to know:-
Eco- = house
Bio- = life
-otomy = to cut or slice
-ology = study of
Therefore, a word like biology would equal life study.
3
You need to know the 7 Characteristics of Life
1- All living things grow.
2- All living things develop.
3- All living things respond to their environment.
4- All living things can reproduce.
4
You need to know the 7 Characteristics of Life
5- All living things are made up of cells.
6- All living things have complex chemistry.
7- All living things maintain homeostasis.
5
Homeostasis = equal balance
If you are hungry, you eat.
If you are thirsty, you drink.
If you are cold, you try to get warm.
This is homeostasis.
If you cannot maintain homeostasis, you get sick.
6
You need to know the Scientific Method
It starts with Observations.
Then, you ask Questions.
Next, you write a hypothesis.
7
Hypothesis = before set down
A hypothesis is written BEFORE doing an experiment.
A hypothesis is the guide we use to figure out what the experiment is going to test.
You NEVER use the word theory unless you have done the same experiment many, many, many, many,... times AND get the same results each time.
8
You need to know that ALL good experiments must have:
A control group
An experimental group
An independent variable
A dependent variable
9
Using the "cheat" DRY MIX
DRY is for the dependent variable.
D = dependent
R = responds to the experiment
Y = on the y-axis
10
Using the "cheat" DRY MIX
MIX is for the independent variable.
M = manipulated the experimentor
I = independent
X = on the x-axis
11
Data can either be QUALI-tative or QUANTI-tative
QUALI-tative = Quality = no numbers = color
QUANTI-tative = Quantity = numbers = height in centimeters (cm)
12
Only AFTER you have done the following:-
Written title, authors, background, and hypothesis
Identified the control group, experimental group, dependent variable, and independent variable
Can you begin listing materials and writing down a procedure.
13
Data tables MUST include labels and units
For example:
Time in seconds (sec)
Height in centimeters (cm)
14
Then begin conducting your experiment
which should be testing your hypothesis.
We will talk about how to analyze the data and write a conclusion during our next Unit.
15
You are now going to work as a study group.
You will use Google Slides to create flash-cards to help you remember material that we covered during Unit 1.
16
You are now going to work as a study group.
This is a Class collaboration.
You will be working together on a Google Slide Document.
17
You are now going to work as a study group.
Each one of you must create five (5) practice questions with answers.
These all need to look different from anything that anyone else is writing.
18
You are now going to work as a study group.
Try to second guess me and figure out what kinds of questions I could ask you.
Some questions will be easy, others will require you to analyze some information.
19
You are now going to work as a study group.
Your questions can be written as a multiple choice question, check all that apply question, or a short answer question.
20
You are now going to work as a study group.
The link to your Google Slides Collaboration is in the chat.
I will be monitoring.
