The hour

In Japanese, the hour is expressed by the number followed by the "counter" じ（寺）.

ごじ です - It is 5 o'clock.

はちじ です - It is 8 o'clock.

*Exception 4 o'clock is よじ and not よんじ

and 9 o'clock is くじ and not きゅうじ

The Minutes

For now, the only minutes we will deal with are :30. For that we will call it はん (half). The minutes always follow the hour in time.

さんじはん (3:30)

A.M. / P.M.

ごぜん - A.M.

ごご - P.M.

Unlike English, these always go before the time.

ごごいちじ - 1 P.M.
