• created by the Deaf person (personal poem they wrote) or translated from English into ASL ( Edgar Allen Poe)

• stories are preserved and passed down from generation to generation by signing instead of spoken or written down. 

• is important in Deaf culture because it is a way to help explain the Deaf identity, beliefs and ways of life for many Deaf people. 

• Many of the artists are Deaf or hard of hearing, some are CODAsaslong as the Deaf art expresses Deaf experience

Deaf/ASL Literature

• It brings the Deaf community together. Deaf art shows the feelings that many Deaf people experience.

• has a recurring theme of Deaf Life, Deaf History, Deaf Culture, American Sign Language, Deaf/Language oppression and/or common everyday themes.

Resistive: is art that expresses the suppression and oppression of the Deaf.

Some of the topics include oralism, audism and Cochlear Implants.

Affirmative: is more playful and warm in nature. It supports ideas like Deaf empowerment, and acceptance.
