​A Select Group

Most of the settlers in Austin’s colony were farmers. They came from Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Missouri. They were part of a larger group of Americans who began migrating west in the early 1800s. Austin attempted to choose settlers of greater education and means, or wealth, because he thought they might prove to be more dependable and less likely to cause trouble.
