Patterns of Electron Arrangements

Bohr models are not needed to write the (shell model) electron arrangements.

Each period (row) has electrons in the same number of shells as the period. Ex: All elements in period 2 have electrons in 2 shells.

Answers :

Ca = (2,8,2) and Br is (2,8,8,17)

Which is the smaller atom?

1

Ca

2

Br

7

Multiple Choice

Which is the correct reason for the answer in the previous question ? There is a .....

1

Weak attraction between p and e- because the valence electrons are in a higher shell.

2

Strong attraction between p and e- because the valence electrons are in a lower shell.

3

Strong attraction between p and e- because there are more p and e- in the atom

4

Weak attraction between p and e- because there are less p and e- in the atom

8

Atomic Radius & Electron Arrangement

(Shell Model)

  • Elements in the same period have valence e- in the same shell, so the amount of charges (die to # p and e-) affect the size or radius of the atom.

  • Elements in the same group have valence e- in the different shells. The location of the valence e- affects the size of the atom.

Which element is more electronegative?

1

Ca

2

Br

10

Multiple Choice

Which the correct reason for the answer in the previous question?

1

The more electrons in an atom, the more electronegative the atom.

2

The bonding electrons are closer to a smaller atom and more attracted.

3

The bonding electrons are further from the larger atom and less attracted.

4

There is an equal sharing of electrons between bonded atoms.

11

Answer Explained

  • Br is more electronegative than Ca

  • Br is a smaller atom than Ca

  • The electron in the bond between Ca is Br is closer to Br than Ca AND more attracted to the protons in the nucleus of Br.
