A student once said: “the Disney princesses are so popular because they rebel against patriarchy and often succeed”
To what extent do you agree?
20
Threshold Task: You must come up with an argument FOR and AGAINST this statement.
Each idea should include:
-A point that is linked to the statement
-A reference to a disney princess/disney character to support your point with explanation
-And explanation of how the audience is encouraged to feel.
21
Model response - why this is a good response? Make notes to submit on the next slide
I agree with the idea that the disney princesses are popular because of the fact that they are often rebellious. In particular, when we observe Mulan we watch her defy patriarchy and join the military force in order to protect her father. This goes against our understanding of patriarchy because she is evidently strong and independent. As such, the resilience she shows during her training and the initiative she shows during battle highlights her strength as a female character. As a result, this inspires the audience and therefore encourages us to admire her character.

Why was the response strong?
23
Improve this response
Disney princesses aren’t that popular. The only reason anybody watches the princess movies is because they are usually beautiful and admirable. I know this because in Cinderella, everybody hates the ugly step-sisters.

Next lesson you will be writing your own response to the question.
For homework, prepare ideas you could include in your response. 1 for and 1 against.
