Pathogens

Microorganisms are living things that are too small to see without a microscope


Some of these microorganisms can cause diseases and are called pathogens

Bacteria

Bacteria are single celled living organisms

They make us feel ill by producing poisons that damage our cells


eg. salmonella, tuberculosis, tetanus

Viruses are much smaller than bacteria

They take over your body's cells to reproduce and they destroy them


eg. HIV, COVID, Common cold, Influenza

There are lots of types of fungi, from yeast and mould cells to mushrooms.

They spread by releasing spores into the air or water.

Stopping the spread of disease

The most effective way of stopping disease is to wash your hands

Food should be stored/refrigerated properly and cooked through

Do not share glasses, cutlery, razors or toothbrushes

Clean surfaces with antibacterial sprays

Avoid contact with infected people

Get treatment, like antibiotics, if possible

Use insect repellants in infectious areas
