Displacement reactions
Use this example -
Mary and Frank are copper oxide
Joe is magnesium
The magnesium (Joe) displaces the copper to become zinc oxide leaving the copper (Frank) alone.
6
7
Ionic equations
In this reaction the sulfate ions, SO42-(aq), remain the same, so do not appear in the ionic equation.
So the correct ionic equation is:
Mg(s) + Cu2+(aq) --> Mg2+(aq) + Cu(s)
This shows that magnesium atoms have a greater tendency to form positive ions than copper atoms (magnesium is more reactive)
8
Oxidation vs reduction
This are the terms we use to describe the transfer of electrons i.e. oxidised ve reduced.
Something that is oxidised loses electrons
Something that is reduced gains them
Look at the OILRIG mnemonic to help
9
Multiple Choice
Has the following been reduced or oxidised based on the loss or gain of electrons - remember OILRIG
Mg(s) --> Mg2+(aq) + 2e-
Oxidised
Reduced
10
Multiple Choice
Has the following been reduced or oxidised based on the loss or gain of electrons - remember OILRIG
Ca(s) --> Ca2+(aq) + 2e-
Oxidised
Reduced
11
Multiple Choice
Has the following been reduced or oxidised based on the loss or gain of electrons - remember OILRIG
Fe(s) --> Fe3+(aq) + 3e-
Oxidised
Reduced
12
Multiple Choice
Will a displacement reaction occur between Zinc sulphate and copper?
What is the correct word equation for this reaction
Zinc sulphate + copper --> zinc + copper sulphate
Zinc sulphate + copper --> zinc sulphate + copper
13
Multiple Choice
What is the correct definition of oxidation?
The gaining of electrons
The loss of electrons
14
Multiple Choice
