Displacement reactions

  • Use this example -

  • Mary and Frank are copper oxide

  • Joe is magnesium

  • The magnesium (Joe) displaces the copper to become zinc oxide leaving the copper (Frank) alone.

Ionic equations

In this reaction the sulfate ions, SO42-(aq), remain the same, so do not appear in the ionic equation.

So the correct ionic equation is:

Mg(s) + Cu2+(aq) --> Mg2+(aq) + Cu(s)

This shows that magnesium atoms have a greater tendency to form positive ions than copper atoms (magnesium is more reactive)

8

Oxidation vs reduction

  • This are the terms we use to describe the transfer of electrons i.e. oxidised ve reduced.

  • Something that is oxidised loses electrons

  • Something that is reduced gains them

  • Look at the OILRIG mnemonic to help
