Metallic bonds

  • Metallic bonds form between 2 metal elements. Covalent is between 2 non-metals and Ionic is between one of each.

  • They form a "sea of delocalised electrons" surrounding positive nuclei.

  • These electrons are mobile and can therefore carry an electrical charge and heat from one end of the metal to the other.

  • This is how they conduct.

  • This lattice structure of atoms also forms layers.

  • These layers can slide and overlap each other.

  • This results in metals becoming Malleable - can be bent into any shape.

  • They are also ductile - can be drawn out into extremely long thin lengths (think wires).
