The passé composé, or compound past, is just a fancy way to say "past tense." It is necessary to differentiate which past tense because there are more than 1!

It is compound because it requires 3 parts: subject + auxiliary verb + past participle (SAPP). Remember this formula and you will always be able to write in the past.

Auxiliary Verb

The auxiliary verb can be AVOIR (to have) or ÊTRE (to be). It must be one of these two verbs. You have to conjugate these verbs in the PRESENT tense as part of the Passé Composé, even though it is a past expression.
