Metals and oxygens
When metals react with oxygen, metal oxides are formed.
This is an oxidation reaction.
Metal + oxygen --> metal oxide
E.g. zinc + oxygen --> zinc oxide
Metal oxides are usually solids and bases.
10
Multiple Choice
Potassium + oxygen -->
Potassium chloride
Pottasium nitrate
Potassium oxide
Potassium sulfate
11
Non metals and oxygens
When non-metals react with oxygen, oxides are also formed.
This is an oxidation reaction.
E.g. sulphur + oxygen --> sulphur dioxide
Non-metal oxides are usually gases and acidic.
12
Multiple Choice
Carbon + oxygen -->
Carbon chloride
Carbon dioxide
Carbon nitrate
Carbon sulfate
13
Metals and water
WRITE THIS DOWN!
Metals + water --> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Metal hydroxides are bases
E.g. sodium + water --> sodium hydroxide + hydrogen
14
Test for hydrogen
We test for hydrogen gas by putting a lit splint in the gas.
You will hear a squeaky pop from the lit splint if hydrogen gas is present.
15
Multiple Choice
Potassium + water -->
Potassium hydroxide + water
Potassium hydroxide + hydrogen
Potassium hydroxide + salt
Potassium hydroxide + oxygen
16
Properties of metals vs non metals
Metals are
- shiny
- Good conductors
- They have a high melting point
- Dense
- Malleable (they can bend)
- sonorous (make a sound when hit)
- solid at room temperature
17
Properties of metals vs non metals
Non metals are
- dull
- poor conductors
- brittle (they cannot bend)
- not sonorous (don't make a sound when hit)
- solid liquid or gas at room temperature
18
Multiple Select
Which of the properties are properties of METALS
shiny
gas at room temperature
cannot conduct electricity
sonourous (makes a sound when you hit it)
malleable (can be bent into different shapes)
19
Multiple Choice
A CONCENTRATED acid
has lots of H+ particles
doesn't have lots of H+ particles
20
Open Ended
A farmer has a field and they want to test its pH. Name something they can use to test pH.
21
Multiple Choice
What is 2500J in kJ?
25kJ
0.25kJ
2.5kJ
250kJ
22
Reactivity
Some metals are more reactive than others
E.g. gold is unreactive and we can wear it as jewellery
e.g. potassium is very reactive and it has to be stored in oil, to prevent it from reacting with oxygen in the air
More reactive metals react more VIGOROUSLY
23
Vigorous reactions
Vigorous reactions might happen
- quickly
- with fire or sparks
- with lots of fizzing
- with a quick temperature or colour change
24
Multiple Choice
What does vigorous mean?
Slow, lazy
Energetic, violent
25
Multiple Choice
If calcium is more reactive than copper, which would give more vigorous reactions?
Calcium
Copper
26
Multiple Choice
If sodium is more reactive than gold, which would fizz the least with acid?
sodium
gold
27
Multiple Choice
There is a faster temperature change when lead reacts with acid, compared to when silver reacts with acid. Which is more reactive?
lead
silver
28
Displacement reactions
More reactive elements will displace (push out) less reactive elements from a compound.
E.g. zinc + iron sulfate --> zinc sulfate + iron
The zinc has displaced the iron because it is more reactive than iron.
29
Multiple Choice
Sodium is more reactive than gold.
Can sodium displace gold from a compound?
Yes
No
30
Multiple Choice
Sodium is more reactive than gold.
Can gold displace sodium from a compound?
Yes
No
31
Multiple Choice
Aluminium is more reactive than iron.
Will a displacement reaction happen if aluminium and iron oxide react?
Yes
No
32
Multiple Choice
Magnesium is more reactive than copper.
Will a displacement reaction happen if magnesium and copper oxide react?
Yes
No
33
Multiple Choice
Zinc is more reactive than copper.
Will a displacement reaction happen if copper and zinc oxide react?
Yes
No
