Chapter 9 Summary

Chapter 9 starts off with Brian trying to start a fire with the hatchet. He was wishing for scrap paper to start the fire. He ripped up his $20 bill to try to use as paper. Brian found paper like material from the tree bark and used that to start a fire. He is using the hatchet to hit against the rock which created sparks.

Brian worked on starting a fire for over two hours. He had to take a couple of breaks for a drink and some berries. He had to really think back to all of his past knowledge about how to start a fire. He considered all of the parts to start a fire.

Finally he was able to start a fire and was so excited he screamed.

15

Chapter 10 Summary

Once Brian had the fire started he did not want to leave it. It was so precious to him. He discovered that the mosquitos did not like the smoke that came from the fire.

He hoped that the fire would keep the critters out of his shelter. The first night with the fire he heard an animal outside moving about and then get into the water. The next morning he discovered the tracks that looked like it was some kind of water animal.

He calls himself city boy. And starts investigating why the animal would have came out of the water. He found a batch of turtle eggs and discovered that the animal must have been a female turtle.

When Brian saw the eggs he immediately thought "FOOD".

16

Chapter 10 Summary Continued

How would Brian eat these eggs?

Brian tries to convince himself to eat the egg raw. It tasted like grease and almost threw it up but he ended up eating six eggs and decided to save the rest for later.
