AO3: Show understanding of the relationships between texts and contexts in which they were written.

The Assessment
This assessment will test, through an extract based response, knowledge and understanding of the 19th century prose novel.
Learners will be expected to comment upon the context of the prose text, the language, structure and form of the text and key themes, characters and ideas within the text.
You will be expected to write 4 paragraphs on the extract, and 6 paragraphs on the novel as a whole.

•Over use of the terms capitalist and socialist – these should not be used in every paragraph – scatter them about your essay a maximum of two times. Use other words to describe Scrooge!
Give thoughtful analysis – zoom in on two words in the quote and analyse their connotations and their significance to Dicken’s message.

Bob Cratchit’s role in the novella is to represent the plight of the poor, as he is an immediate source of sympathy in the novella.
Dickens depicts him as a loving father and husband, which humanises the working class.
Usually in Victorian literature, the working class were depicted as peripheral, unimportant characters. In the works of Dickens he defies these expectations. presenting the lower class in a positive light and as multi-faceted characters.
