Following a sentence pattern
In Japanese, statements are easily turned into questions, and vice versa. Much of the time, a question is an assumption describing a situation, formed as a question. In these cases, responding back without the question particle confirms what they have said to be true, and in the case of incorrect assumptions, a slight modification of the sentence can be used to correct.
