Meiosis

Meiosis is a type of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes in the parent cell by half and produces four gamete cells. This process is required to produce egg and sperm cells for sexual reproduction. During reproduction, when the sperm and egg unite to form a single cell, the number of chromosomes is restored in the offspring.

5.4.8 Explain the three possible processes (crossing over, law of segregation, law of independent assortment) that provide genetic variation

  • Alleles segregate randomly into gametes

  • Alleles of two (or more) different genes get sorted into gametes independently of one another.

How to create a chromosome map from crossing over frequencies

  • Start with the genes that are the farthest apart first, then go down stepwise.

  • Solve it like a puzzle, using a pencil to determine the positions of the other genes

  • Subtraction will be necessary to determine the final distances between each gene
