Now, you will review the present tense of SER y ESTAR = both mean TO BE

Ser and Estar conjugations

• Ser is used for: Permanence. We use the acronym DOCTOR to remember this: Descriptions, Occupations/Titles, Characteristics, Origins, Relationships

• Estar is used for: Temporary things. We use the acronym PLACE to remember this: Positions, Locations, Actions, Conditions, Emotions

Ejemplos

• Mi mamá es amable = Description so we use SER

• Joel está en Puerto Rico = Physical Location of the subject so we use ESTAR

• Yo estoy feliz = emotion so we use ESTAR

• Somos hermanos = Relationship so we use SER

• Ms. Pérez es la maestra = Occupation of the subject so we use SER

• Estamos en la sala = Phyiscal location so we use ESTAR

Review the Verbos Reflexivos conjugación

¿Qué es el Verbo Reflexivo?

• Reflexive Verbs end in "se" always

• You conjugate as you normally do, you just have an extra step to add (next slide)

• Ejemplos: Ducharse, lavarse, acostarse (o-ue), desvestirse (e-ie)

• Reflexive Pronouns are required for Reflexive Verb Conjugation

• Notice how Él/ella/usted and Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes share "se".

• Ex: Ellos se lavan ..... Él se lava

Recordar:

• Stem-changes do not occur in subject pronoun "nosotros"

• Ejemplo: Nosotros nos acostamos, nosotros nos dormimos, nosotros nos desvestimos

Steps and examples

• Just conjugate the verb as you normally would as if it didn't end in "se"

• Memorize the chart to complete conjugation

• Yo me ducho

• Tú te desvistes

• Nosotros nos dormimos

• Ellos se secan

• Él se baña
