Four Speeches Lincoln used to try to preserve the Union
1st Inaugural Address– Abraham Lincoln wanted to persuade THE SOUTH that he was not “after” or “against” them. Lincoln tried to convince the South that everything he did was in the name of preserving the Union.
Gettysburg Address– After the battle of Gettysburg Abraham Lincoln, for the first time, spoke out publicly about the Civil War. Lincoln was very heart broken as to the state of the Union. He advocated for the War to continue.

Four Speeches (Continued)
2nd Inaugural Address—Abraham Lincoln knew the War just about over with a sure Union victory. He used this speech to try to convince the North to be soft and understanding to letting the South come back into the Union. He wanted this process to be very easy.
4. Habeas Corpus– to end the act of rebellion, Lincoln suspended the right of a trial by jury for any state that was still acting like they were a part of the Confederate States of America.

The BLOODIEST day of the Civil War.
Because of the many deaths, Abraham Lincoln wanted the war to be over.
Desperate to end it, he issued the biggest threat of all time known as the EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION.

Battle of Vicksburg
Vicksburg is a city overlooking the Mississippi River.
Started the first part of the United State’s “Anaconda Plan”.
“He who controls Vicksburg, controls the Mississippi River”.

Battle of Gettysburg
The Deadliest Battle of the Civil War. (Over 3 Days, 51,000 Dead)
After this battle, Abraham Lincoln, for the first time spoke out against the war. He delivered his famous Gettysburg Address.
Lincoln urged that the war must go on… Finish the fight in honor of the fallen soldiers.

Battle of Atlanta
Atlanta was the “hub” of railroads that connected the South.
To ship supplies throughout the Confederate States, they had to go through Atlanta.
The North decided they needed to take Atlanta to cripple the Confederate supply lines.

The End of the War
General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate Army surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant of the United States Army at Appomattox Court House, in Virginia on April 9, 1865 to End the Civil War.

The Emancipation Proclamation
Freed all slaves in states that WERE NOT a part of the Union.
States had a deadline of January 1, 1863 to come back into the Union or stay a part of the Confederate States of America.
Abraham Lincoln used “Emergency Powers” to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.
