Rate of Reaction Lab

2

Introduction

  • Based on what you have learned, you will be asked to complete a hypothesis based on the rates of reaction. You will also be required to classify the reaction as endothermic or exothermic

  • The materials that will be used to test the hypotheses are a Thermometer, Stop watch, Film canister with a lid, Alka-Seltzer tablets and Water. An Alka-Seltzer tablet will be the solute and water the solvent. The solvent will be poured into the canister, the solute will be placed in the solvent and the cap snapped on. The timer will time how long it takes for the top to pop. The Temperature will be recorded for the reactions

3

Data Table on Google Sheets

  • Create a data table to record the rates of reaction for the following:

  • Control group (Half Tablet and room temperature water)

  • Experimental Groups- Full Tablet and a Crushed half tablet , both in room temperature water and half tablet in Hot and half tablet in cold water.

  • Include the information that was used to classify the reaction

4

Control

Half of a tablet in room temperature water. Record rate of reaction and record.

5

Multiple Choice

If the Full tablet is dissolved then the rate of reaction will _________ because

1

increase... because of increase surface area

2

match the control... it does not effect rate of reaction

3

decrease... because of decrease surface area

4

increase... because of increase concertation

5

decrease... because of decrease concentration

6

Multiple Choice

If a Crushed half tablet is dissolved then the rate of reaction will _________ because

1

increase... because of increase surface area

2

match the control... it does not effect rate of reaction

3

decrease... because of decrease surface area

4

increase... because of increase concertation

5

decrease... because of decrease concentration

7

Multiple Choice

If HOT water is used to dissolve a half tablet then the rate of reaction will _________ because

1

increase... because of increase surface area

2

increase... because of increase temperature

3

decrease... because of decrease temperature

4

match the control... it does not effect rate of reaction

5

decrease... because of decrease surface area

8

Multiple Choice

If Cold water is used to dissolve a half tablet then the rate of reaction will _________ because

1

match the control... it does not effect rate of reaction

2

increase... because of increase temperature

3

decrease... because of decrease temperature

4

increase... because of increase concertation

5

decrease... because of decrease surface area

9

Poll

Was your Hypothesis Supported by data?

Yes the data supported the hypothesis

No, the data did not supported the hypothesis

10

Multiple Select

Which of the following were evidence of a chemical reaction had taken place in this lab? You may choose more than one.

1

Color Change

2

Gas Production

3

Formation of a Precipitate

4

Temperature Change

5

Combustion

11

Multiple Choice

This reaction is classified as an ______ because...

1

endothermic …the temperature decreased

2

endothermic... the reaction times were different

3

exothermic... the temperatures decreased

4

exothermic... the reaction times were similar

5

Could not be determined in with data recorded

12

Multiple Select

IF ________ and ________ are combined THEN it would have the fastest rate of reaction

1

16

Multiple Choice

Based on the data from the Chart/Graph, which of the following showed the slowest reaction an why?

1

Cold water because the cold water bar was taller than the control bar.

2

Hot water because the hot water bar was taller than the control bar.

3

Cold water because the cold water bar was shorter than the control bar.

4

Hot water because the hot water bar was shorter than the control bar.

17

Multiple Choice

Which of the following is not a factor that affects solubility?

1

Temperature

2

Solvents

3

Activation energy

4

Pressure

18

Multiple Choice

Bob adds a 3 gram piece of lemon-flavored hard candy and 6 grams sugar in a glass of warm water. Which would devolve faster and why?

1

The lemon drop; it has less mass

2

The lemon drop; it has less surface area

3

The sugar; it has more mass

4

The sugar; it has more surface area

19

Multiple Choice

Which of the following is a balanced chemical equation?

1

12CO2 + 6H2O → 2C6H12O6

2

CO2 + H2O → C6H12O6

3

6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6

4

CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6

20

Conclusion

  • Used that data collected to make a graph comparing the Experimental Group's data to the Control data. Use averages for multiple trials

  • Make a separate graph with the information used to classify the reaction as exothermic or endothermic

  • Upload the data table and the graphs to the assignment in Google Classroom labeled Rates of Reaction Lab Data table and Graph
