What is the subjunctive?

• It is NOT a tense (e.g. past, present, future)

• It is a mood

• A mood is how a speaker feels about an action.

The Indicative Mood expresses:

• Factual information

• Certainty

• Objective statements

• It is what you think of as the past, present and future tenses you already know.

The subjunctive is used when there are two clauses and the subject of the verb in the second clause is different from the subject in the main clause. They are usually joined by que.

• Yo quiero(main clause) que tú visites (second clause)

• Yo siento (main clause) que Carla no pueda (second clause)

• Yo quiero visitar Argentina (no subject change.)
