First + Second Conditional & Time Conjunctions

First Conditional

It's used to talk about things which might happen in the future. Of course, we can't know what will happen in the future, but this describes possible things, which could easily come true.

Second Conditional

It has two uses.

First, we can use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not going to be true. Maybe I'm imagining some dream for example.

Second, we can use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible, because it's not true.

Time Conjunctions - Alternatives to if (in 1st Conditional)

• Unless: In place of “if not” - You’ll fail the test unless you study.

  = You’ll fail the test if you don’t study.

• As soon as: To emphasize immediacy - This situation is very urgent. I’ll call you as soon as I have more information.

• When: When the “condition” will definitely happen. - When I die, I’ll leave all my money to charity.

Time Conjunctions - Alternatives to if (in 1st Conditional)

• Until: up to a time in the past or future. - We cannot start until she arrives.

• If: introduce possible or impossible situations or conditions and their results. The situations or conditions can be real, imagined or uncertain:
