DNA stands for....
Deoxyribonevermind
Eoxyribonucleic acid
Deoxyribonuclase acid
Deoxyribonucleic acid
3
Asexual Reproduction
We looked last week at mitosis as a process to allow single cells to reproduce themselves.
Today we are going to look at how single cellular organisms use mitosis to create offspring!
4
Asexual Reproduction in Single Cell Organisms
A SINGLE organism generates an offspring with identical characteristics.
The conditions for why an organism reproduces asexually rests on it's environment.
5
Binary Fission
A form of asexual reproduction used by a single celled organism that does not have a nucleus
A parent cell will divide so that each new cell contains a single chromosome
Mitosis and Binary Fission are not the same as do not have a nucleus, it does not under go PMAT

Multiple Choice
What is a factor for a cell to reproduce asexually or sexually?
Ecology
Geography
Environment
Minecraft Servers
8
Asexual Reproduction (Budding and Sporulation)
A form of reproduction where a new organism grows on the original. Separating only when mature
9
Budding
Budding: Yeast cells are a great example for budding.
A copy of the nucleus is created and a tiny bud appears on the cell wall. The bud will grow and eventually break off to form a new yeast cell taking away the copy of the nucleus.
10
Sporulation
Moulds such as Rhizopus (Bread Mould)
Spores are produced in structures called sporangium's. These sporangium's host spores until the organism finds itself in favourable conditions.

LETS GOOOOOO - what organism is a great example for asexual reproduction via budding...
Carrots
Ducks
Rhizopus
Yeast
13
Asexual Reproduction in Animals
Animals are either vertebrates (with a spine) or invertebrates (without a spine)
Various invertebrates reproduce asexually!
Sponges and hydra will reproduce by budding
Planaria will reproduce via binary fission
14
15
Advantages of Asexual Reproduction
Allows stationary organisms to reproduce
Allows reproduction with minimum expenditure of energy
Prevents genetic change that might be a disadvantage to the offspring for survival means.
16
Disadvantages
Forms of asexual reproduction can be very wasteful. As an example spore production, not all offspring survive
Can lead to overcrowding and competition
No genetic variation to allow for adaptation. Meaning that if an environment changes then the organisms may be at risk of dying off.
17
Conclusion
Its interesting that even at the cellular level we see how organisms REQUIRE a previous organism to reproduce... Even at the level of single cellular organisms the information that each living organism contains is necessary for it to successfully reproduce... where did this information come from? Why does one bud, one sporulate, one fragement? What mechanisms are present to tell the organism what to do.
