1

protons

2

electrons

3

neutrons

4

5

Multiple Choice

An atom is identified by the number of---

1

neutrons

2

protons

3

electrons

4

mass number

6

Valence Electrons

What are they?

How do you find them using the periodic table?

7

Multiple Choice

Valence electrons are--

1

electrons found in the nucleus of an atom

2

all of the electrons found in the electron cloud

3

electrons found on the last energy level of an atom

4

electrons found on the first energy level of an atom

8

Open Ended

The periodic table can be used to quickly find the number of valence electrons. Explain how to use the periodic table to find the number of valence electrons.

9

The Periodic Table

  • How is the table arranged?

  • What information can I get from this table?

10

Using the periodic table to find protons, neutrons and electrons.

To find: protons--look at the atomic number

To find: neutrons--subtract the atomic number from the mass number(be sure to round, no decimals)

To find: electrons--look at the atomic number, they will be the same as the protons--that is why all elements are this periodic table are neutral.
