Uplift

  • t converging tectonic plates cause the land at plate boundaries to crumple and rise up.

  • Mountains form from this process.

17

changes are caused by weathering and erosion at Earth’s surface, and by high pressures and temperatures below Earth’s surface.

18

Multiple Choice

True

2

False

22

The Rock Cycle The series of processes that change one type of rock into another type of rock

23

One example is igneous rock that begins as lava. The lava cools and crystallizes. Over time, the igneous rock is uplifted and exposed on Earth’s surface. Water erodes this rock and forms sediments that eventually are compacted and cemented together to form sedimentary rock. As years go by, this sedimentary rock is subducted deep beneath Earth’s surface. The sedimentary rock undergoes intense heat and pressure forming metamorphic rock, which can melt and create new igneous rock.

24

Multiple Choice

Once a sedimentary rock is metamorphosed, it may never be a sedimentary rock again.

1

True

2

False

25
