by Sir Magic Myk
2
Important Question:
What are the characteristics of homogeneous mixtures?
3
Objectives
1. Differentiate homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures
2. Identify the properties of homogeneous mixtures
3. Explain the concepts of solubility and concentration
4. Perform an experiment to compare the solubilities of three brands of paracetamol in water
5. Measure the mass and volume in preparing solutions
4
Study the picture below. Can you identify the component of this mixture?
These chemicals are examples of homogeneous mixtures.
5
What Are the Solubility of the Homogeneous Mixtures Around You?
A mixture in which the components or ingredients are not distinguished from one another is called a homogeneous mixture, which are also known as solutions.
6
Multiple Select
Which of the mixtures in your house are homogeneous?
alcohol and water
blood
brewed coffee
pizz
7
In a solution,
the additive is dissolved and thoroughly mixed into the main component. Its main component is called the solvent, while the dissolved additive is called the solute.
Water, for example, is a solvent that dissolves many substances. This is why it is often called the universal solvent.
Water is the universal solvent
8
Solubility is the property of a solute to dissolve in a solution. Some solutes dissolve faster than other solutes. It is determined by the amount of solute that can be dissolved in a fixed amount of solvent.
9
There are also solids that are insoluble in water like chalk and naphthalene. They do not dissolve or mix with water.
10
Concentration of Solution
The concentration of a solution can be expressed simply as the amount of solute dissolved in a specified amount of solvent.
Putting in more solute in the same amount of solvent results in a concentrated solution. Some concentrated solutions show the properties of the solute better. If you put in more sugar, your drink will be sweeter, and if you put in too much salt in your broth, it will make it very salty.
11
Concentration can be expressed in percent (%).
You can use % concentration to express how much liquid solute is mixed with a liquid solvent.
The bottle with 40% alcohol actually has more water, which is (60%) in the alcohol bottle, than the alcohol. Thus, a 150 mL bottle of 40% alcohol has 60 mL alcohol and 90 mL water.
Do not feel cheated for this is actually alright. You cannot use 100% alcohol as it will be harmful to your skin. A 40% concentration is enough to kill most bacteria and make your hands clean.
12
Multiple Select
Can you guess which of these two kinds of alcohol has a higher concentration? What would you do to identify it?
Yes, it is 70% and 40% rubbing alcohol solution.
No, it looks like water.
