What is the largest watershed in the United States?

9

Parts of a Watershed

Headwaters - area where the water collects at the top of a watershed aka the source

Stream - Water flowing down from headwaters forming a channel.

  • Perrenial Stream - Stream that flows all year

  • Intermittent Stream - Streams that only flows for part of year

10

Parts of a Watershed

Stream Mouth - Place where a stream empties into a larger body of water

Tributaries - creeks and small rivers that feed into larger rivers

Drainage divides - where two watersheds meet, therefore both sides drain to different watersheds.

Multiple Choice

What is a watershed?

1

Imaginary lines drawn horizontally to show the angular distance from the equator

2

An area of land where surface water drains down to a single point

3

A body of permeable rock that can contain or transmit groundwater

4

The study of physical features covering an area

13

14

Multiple Choice

Select all of the following that a drainage basin can drain down to...

1

Lake

2

Ocean

3

River

4

Lakes, Oceans, and rivers

15

16

Multiple Choice

Watersheds are made of...

1

Smaller Watersheds

2

Porous rock that permeates water

17

18

Multiple Choice

When identifying watersheds, you use HUC's. What does HUC stand for?

1

Hyper ultimate coeds

2

Hydrodynamic universal coalition

3

Humid unfiltered cones

4

Hydrologic Unit Codes

20

Multiple Choice

Why is it important to have accurate and detailed precipitation data from multiple areas of a watershed?

1

Because water is water. And water doesn't obey the laws of physics

2

Because all of the averages can add up quickly together! This increases the overall water collected in a watershed

21

22

Multiple Choice

What factors DO NOT go into soil absorption. Select all that apply.

1

type of soil

2

the pH of the soil - how acidic or alkaline the soil is currently

3

how absorbent it is

4

how much water is already in the soil

23

24

Multiple Select

What two factors go into rate of evaporation? (Select two!)

1

temperature

2

amount of rainfall

3

amount of soil

4

humidity

Chapter 3:What is your watershed address?

Go to the online textbook found on the slide after next and read chapter 3

"What is your watershed address?"

Scroll down to the heading that says "What you do to the land, you do to the water"

***Read the chapter from that heading until the end. While you are reading focus on the questions on the next slide.***

Chapter 3: What is your watershed address?

Questions:

1) What is sediment and where does it come from?

2) What is erosion and what causes it?

3) How do human activities affect the quality and quantity of water in a watershed?
