2
PRINCIPAL QUANTUM NUMBERS (n)
- identifies the main energy level in which the electrons belong.
- the value of n is a positive integer: 1,2,3
- therefore, the first main energy level the n value is 1 and so on.
3
THE AZIMUTHAL QUANTUM NUMBER , (l)
- It gives the measure of the momentum of an electron in its motion around the nucleus.
- it can also indicate the main energy level is made up of sublevels (subshells)
- l value is determined by the value on n it may have a value of 0 t (n-1)
-Example : for n=1, the l=0 for n=2, the l = 0,1
4
THE MAGNETIC QUANTUM NUMBER , (m)
- Describes the behavior of an electron in a magnetic field with assigned values of 0, +1 an d-1
-Example: for s sublevel where l= 0, m=0
for p sublevel where l=1, m= +1, 0, -1
for d sublevel where l=2 , m= +2,+1,0,-1.-2
for f sublevel where l= 3, m= +3,+2,+1, 0, -1, -2,-3

THE SPIN QUANTUM NUMBER
-Descibe the spin of the electron about its axis.
- the value (+ 1/2) if the electron moves clockwise direction and (-1/2) if in counterclockwise direction.
According the Pauli's Exclusion Principle states that no oitwo electrons can have the same set of quantum numbers.
