verbs!

Verbs are action words—they represent things you do. To goto danceto speakto play, and to study are all examples of verbs. There are three types of verbs in Spanish due to the three different word endings possible for a verb. In this activity, you will learn about the first type. These are called '-ar verbs.'

The most basic form of a verb is the infinitive, which is what you’ll see in the dictionary. For example, you will find the verb cortar, which means 'to cut,' in the dictionary, but to use the verb in conversation, you must know how to conjugate it in Spanish. In English, the conjugation of 'to cut' is 'I cut,' 'you cut,' and so on. Just as these conjugations are not provided in an English dictionary, they are not provided in a Spanish dictionary; you must memorize them. Unfortunately, Spanish conjugations tend to be a little more complex.

-ar verb conjugation endings

we take off the -ar and add one of these!

yo - o nosotros / nosotras - amos

tu- as vosotros / vosotras - ais

el / ella / usted - a ellos/ellas/usteded - an

6

-ar conjugations continued

pay attention to the endings!

In Spanish, the ending of a conjugated verb tells you who the subject is — that is, it tells you who’s actually doing the verb. Here are the endings for regular -ar verbs. Not all verbs are regular but you have to start the learning process somewhere!

-o

-amos

-as

-áis

-a

-an

7

-ar conjugations continued

Remember a verb that ends in -ar, such as hablar, means to talk. No one is talking. As soon as someone 'talks' I have to take off the -ar of hablar and put a new ending, or conjugation, onto the verb that makes the person talk.

Notice how the endings in

hablar change based on the

person who is talking.

8

conjuation.. what does it mean?

When we take off the -ar ending and add a new ending, it allows the person to do whatever action of the verb. Check out these examples!

Yo trabajo en un banco. .... I work at/in a bank.

Mama limpia la casa ... Mom cleans the house.

What is it?

  • we take off the ending (-ar in this case) and add a new ending

  • we do this when there is a person doing the action expressed by the verb. Example: hablar means to talk. As soon as someone is talking, I cannot have hablar anymore! I have to take off the -ar and pick a new ending that matches the person talking.

  • yo - o nosotros - amos

  • tu- as vosotros- ais

  • el / ella/ ud. a ellos/ellas/uds- an

23

What time is it?

Es la una or Son las ....

When telling time in Spanish we always start with either:

Es la una

or

Son las ....

Es la una is used when it's the 1:00 hour

Son las ... is used when the hour is any hour but 1:00

24

what about the minutes?

y and menos

To add minutes to the hour in Spanish we use the letter 'y' which is a word. It means and. When in a sentence the y is read 'eee' like the y in baby sounds!

ex:

12:05 = son las doce y cinco

1:05= es la una y cinco

25

Fill in the Blank

What time is this:

Son las seis y ocho.

26

Fill in the Blank

What time is this:

Es la una y diez.

27

What about the minutes?

y and menos

When the minutes in the hour are: 31 and after, we use menos. Menos means 'minus' or 'subtract.'

When the minutes are :31 and after, we go to the next hour and subtract back to that number.

Ex: To say it's 2:45 I would say that it's 3:00 minus 15 minutes, or, 15 minutes before 3:00

2:45= son las tres menos quince (It's 3:00 minus 15 minutes)

28

Fill in the Blank
