Long division is broken up into four repeating steps. Divide, Multiply, Subtract, and Bring Down. You must repeat these steps until you get to the bring down step and there isn't another number to bring down. If the last number you wrote is a zero you are finished but if it is anything else that number is the remainder.

You will always use the number that you just wrote! Keep track of the number you wrote. If you just wrote the number on top you just complete your divide step.

When you multiply or divide you always use your divisor (side number)! In the example to the right the divisor (side number) is 3. If you keep track of the number you just wrote you will know what numbers to divide and multiply.

When following the steps you will make a vertical line of numbers from the top of the problem to the bottom. You will do this until you get to the bring down step. This step will start the new line for you. In the image to the right they just wrote the 6 and will multiply it by 18. That 18 will go at the bottom continuing our vertical line. If you keep track of your line you will know where to write your numbers.

Where to Write
Multiply
With each step we need to write a number. It is important to know where to write each number. When multiplying write the product at the bottom of the long division problem. The ones place of the product should line up with the quotient you just multiplied by at the top of the problem

17
Where to Write
Bring Down
Remember we always use the number that we just wrote. The step before bring down is subtract. After subtracting the new number was 0. The 6 has to be brought down to the zero and our new number will be 6. Make sure the number you brought down is lined up with the number you subtracted becasue it can form a new number.

Bring it Back!
Bring it back is not a step. Bring it back tells the person doing the problem to go back to the beginning and divide.
