Adams-Onis Treaty- Spain still controlled Florida at this point. The Native Americans in the region would hide in the swamp lands, come out and attack white communities. Because Florida was so far away from the rest of New Spain, Spain had trouble protecting its settlers in the region from these Natives. This led to the Adams-Onis Treaty ceding Florida to the U.S.

Missouri Compromise- After adding territories that would eventually become states, the issue of slavery started coming up again. Missouri wanted to be added to the Union as a slave state, but this would cause more congressmen in the legislative branch to be pro-slavery as they would be representing slave owners. Henry Clay drafted the Missouri Compromise which stated Missouri would be added as a slave state and Maine would be added as a free state (outlawed slavery). This would add 2 pro-slavery senators from Missouri and 2 anti-slavery senators from Maine, therefore no laws outlawing slavery would be able to pass in the legislature.

Monroe Doctrine- During Monroe’s presidency, Mexico and other South American countries were fighting and gaining their independence from Spain. Americans were worried Spain would retaliate and start another war in order to regain control of those territories. James Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine which stated that the U.S. would not get in between conflicts occurring in Europe, but in exchange Europe couldn’t colonize in the western hemisphere (the Americas).
