How do materials
move in and out of
cells?
Lesson 2-7
2
Objective: Describe how materials can move in
and out of cells.
Key Terms:
diffusion: movement of material from an area where molecules
are crowded to an area where they are less crowded.
passive transport: movement of material through a membrane
with the use of energy.
osmosis: movement of water through a membrane
active transport: movement of materials through a membrane
using energy.
3
Diffusion
●
molecule is the smallest unit of a
substance that has all the properties
of that substance
●
molecules are always moving
●
molecules moving from crowded
areas to less crowded areas
4
Open Ended
Where do most molecules move to?
5
Passive Transport
●
diffusion (not always) takes place through the cell
membrane
●
cell membranes have tiny holes
●
molecules move through holes until same number inside
and outside
●
does not require energy
6
Osmosis
●
special kind of diffusion
●
movement of water through a
membrane
●
many substances dissolve in water
before move into cell
7
Open Ended
What would happen if water constantly entered a cell and none left it?
8
9
Active Transport
●
cells usually need to have more molecules inside than
outside
●
molecules move toward more crowded
●
this is opposite than what naturally happens
●
requires energy
