Uses of Biotechnology
2
Biotechnology = technology
that utilizes biological systems,
living organisms or parts of this
to develop or create different
products

Recombinant DNA: DNA that
has been created by combining
sections from different organisms.
Transgenic Organisms:
organisms whose genetic
material has been changed by
the addition of foreign genes.
Biotechnology has many uses in
medicine, including the production
of medications using recombinant
DNA, vaccine development and
testing and transplants using
transgenic organisms.
4
Agricultural Uses of Biotechnology
Biotechnology is widely used in agriculture
to produce genetically modified
organisms (GMOs), with traits such as
improved pest, disease, and drought
resistance, crop production, biofuels, and
animal and plant breeding.
Cloning is a technique scientists
use to make exact genetic copies
of living things. Genes, cells,
tissues, and even whole animals
can all be cloned.
5
Industrial Uses of Biotechnology
Industrial biotechnology
companies use many
specialized techniques
to find and improve
enzymes and other
useful bioproducts. In
fact, people have been
using microbes for
fermentation of beer,
wine, cheese, yogurt,
and other food
products for 1,000s of
years.
6
Environmental Uses of Biotechnology
Bioremediation is a process using
biological organisms to solve an
environmental problem such as
contaminated soil or water.
Biotechnology is also used for
environmental protection
purposes. Microbes can be used
in a variety of ways to minimize
waste, convert materials into less
harmful substances.
7
Ethics and Concerns
A concern about whether transgenic crops cause
damage to the natural environment. One example
includes pollen from transgenic corn.. It has been
shown that hybrid corn expresses a bacterial toxin
inits pollen, which has been suggested to kill the
Monarch butterfly.
Some concerns about
cloning include
developmental defects,
premature aging, stem
cell harvesting.
Some concerns about
GMOs include
decreased genetic
diversity and impacts to
human health.
