Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers

media

20

Improper Fraction:

When the numerator (top number) is larger than the denominator (bottom number).

media

21

HOW???? Are we going to reduce this fraction??

Hint: You need to know how to do simple division.

media

22

We use a MIXED NUMBER!

A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction. Here we have 2 whole circles and 1/3 of a circle.
2 1/3

media

23

7/3 is our improper fraction. Divide straight up! The 3 divides into the 7, 2 times with one left over.

2 is our whole number and the leftover 1 is our numerator. 3 stays as the denominator.

26

What if I need to change a mixed number to an improper fraction??

It's as easy as multiplying and adding.

media

27

Converting a mixed number to an improper fraction

  • Multiply the denominator by the whole number

  • Then add the numerator

  • That answer is your new numerator

  • Keep the same denominator

  • Voila!!!

How to find a fraction of an amount (for example, 2/5 of 150)

media

32

How to find a fraction of an amount

(for example 2/5 of 150)

  • Divide the amount by the bottom number of the fraction

  • 150 divided by 5 = 30

  • Multiply that amount by the top number

  • 30 x 2 = 60

  • 2/5 of 150 = 60
