How many remember Order of Operation

I know this very well

I remember some of it

Never heard of it

3

When we perform multiple operations while simplifying an expression, the operations must be performed in this order

You must always work from Left to Right

Order of Operation

4

Multiple Choice

So let put these in the right order. What is the 1st step of PEMDAS?

2(4+5) -9 ÷\div 3 + 22

1

Parentheses, you got to add 4+5

2

Divided, you need to divided -9 ÷\div 3

3

Add, you need to add 3 + 2

4

Exponent. You need to find 22 or 2x2

5

Multiple Choice

So when working with expressions we always start with parentheses or grouping. What my next step?

2(9) -9 ÷\div 3 + 22

1

Multiply, you need to multiply 2 x 9

2

exponent, you need to find 22 or

2 x 2

3

Add, you need to add 3 + 2

4

Subtract, You need to subtract 9 - 9

6

Multiple Choice

So the 2nd step is to find the exponent. What my next step?

2(9) -9 ÷\div 3 + 4

1

Add 3 + 4

2

Subtract 9-9

3

Multiply 2 x 9

4

divided -9 ÷\div 3

7

Multiple Choice

Working Left to Right we need to Multiply before what? What is my next step?

18 -9 ÷\div 3 + 4

1

Add 3 + 4

2

Subtract 18 - 9

3

Divided 9÷39\div3

8

Multiple Choice

Order of Operation said that we add and subtract last, but which one do I do 1st?

18 -3 + 4

1

We work from Left to Right, so you subtract 18 - 3

2

We work from Right to Left, so you

Add 3 + 4

9

Poll

So you subtract 18 - 3 = 15 and then add 4 to it. So the answer is 19

How do you feel about order of operation?

I got it. We can move on

I still need some help

I'm so loss

Question image

5 x 4 = 20. We have solve the Multipion and we do not have a Divination. Which way do I go?

Use the order of operations to evaluate this expression:

1 + 20 - 9

1

Add 1 + 20, because you go from

Left to Right

2

Subtract 20 - 9 because you go from

Right to Left

21

Multiple Choice

Simplify this expression:

4(1 - 2b) + 7b - 10

What do I need to do to get rid of the parentheses?

1

Subtract 1 - 2b

2

Add 4 + 1

3

Multiply the 4 by what inside the parentheses. 4(1) & 4(2b)

4

You can just drop them

22

Multiple Choice

Anytime we need to get rid of the parentheses we have to use the distributive property and multiply the number outside by the numbers inside. What is my like terms I can add or subtract together?

4(1) -4(2b) + 7b - 10 = 4 - 8b + 7b -10

1

We can combine the 4 & -10,

-8b & 7b

2

We can combine the -8b & -10,

4 & 7b

3

We can combine the 7b & -10,

4 & -8b

4

We can combine the -8b & 4,

-10 & 7b

23

Answer

To combine like term we need to have the same variable rise to the same power. So we can combine -8b and 7b. We can also combine 4 and -10

8 is the larger number, so we keep the (-) sign and subtract 8b-7b = 1b, so the answer is -1b or -b
10 is the larger number, so we keep the (-) sign and subtract 10-4 = 6, so the answer is -6

Answer to Simplify this expression:
4(1 - 2b) + 7b - 10 = -b - 6

Multiple Choice

What is the value of this expression when a = 2 and b = -3?

a3 + b35\frac{a^3\ +\ b^3}{5}

After I input a & b I would get what?

1

(6)3(3)35\frac{\left(-6\right)^3-\left(-3\right)^3}{5}

2

(3)3 235\frac{\left(-3\right)^3-\ 2^3}{5}

3

13435\frac{1^3-4^3}{5}

4

23(3)35\frac{2^3-\left(-3\right)^3}{5}

27

Multiple Choice

Question image

23 + (3)35\frac{2^3\ +\ \left(-3\right)^3}{5}

So if we solve for the exponent what the base and exponent look like?

1

2x2+(3)(3)5\frac{2x2^{ }+\left(-3\right)\left(-3\right)^{ }}{5}

2

2x2x2+ (3)(3)(3)5\frac{2x2x2+\ \left(-3\right)\left(-3\right)\left(-3\right)}{5}

3

(23)(23)(23)5\frac{\left(2-3\right)\left(2-3\right)\left(2-3\right)}{5}

4

2x3+(3)x35\frac{2x3+\left(-3\right)x3}{5}

28

Multiple Choice

After multiply everything out it will look like this

8  (27)5\frac{8\ -\ \left(-27\right)}{5}

What happen to a number if I multiply two (-) negative number?

1

I get a positive number

2

Multiple Choice

Evaluate the expression for m = -3.

45+m-4\left|5+m\right|

What do I put in for m?

1

45+4-4\left|5+4\right|

2

453-4\left|5-3\right|

3

45+1-4\left|5+1\right|

4

459-4\left|5-9\right|

32

Multiple Choice

So 453 = 42-4\left|5-3\right|\ =\ -4\left|2\right| Since 5-3 = 2, I have solve what in the Absolute Value. What does Absolute Value mean??

1

Absolute value take any number and make it positive, so 2=2\left|2\right|=2

2

Absolute value take any number and make it negative, so 2=2\left|2\right|=-2

33

Multiple Choice

Absolute Value take any number and make it positive, so -4 x 2. What happen when a negative number is multiply by a positive number?

1

It stay negative, so -4 x 2 = -8

2

It turn positive, so -4 x 2 = 8

34

Poll

Great Job! so the Answer to

Evaluate the expression for m = -3 45+m = 8-4\left|5+m\right|\ =\ -8
