Class Norms
7
Standard
SEV1. Obtain, evaluate, and
communicate information to investigate
the flow of energy and cycling of matter
within an ecosystem.
b. Develop and use a model based on
the Laws of Thermodynamics to predict
energy transfers throughout an
ecosystem (food chains, food webs,
and trophic levels).
8
Learning Target
I can describe the different levels of
a trophic pyramid.
I can explain the organism niche at
each level.
9

Which part
of this food
web does
not count as
a food
chain?
10
Hotspot
Which organisms are apex predators?
11
Hotspot
Which organisms are not connected to the food chain?
12
Ecosystems Require Energy
Ecosystems require constant inputs of energy from sunlight or
chemicals. Producers use energy and inorganic molecules to make
food. Consumers take in food by eating producers or other living
things. Decomposers break down dead organisms and other organic
wastes and release inorganic molecules back to the environment.
13
Trophic levels
●
I need to review and study trophic levels

16
Ecosystem Energy Flow
For most of life the energy flow starts with the sun. Only 1% of
the energy entering the biome is captured. Only 10% of this
energy is passed on, the rest is converted to heat as it is used.
17
Statement
● In terrestrial ecosystems, primary productivity is highest
in warm, wet places with plenty of sunlight, like tropical
forest regions. In contrast, deserts have the lowest
primary productivity.
● In marine ecosystems, primary productivity is highest in
shallow, nutrient rich waters, such as coral reefs and
algal beds.
18
Multiple Choice
What does primary productivity mean?
Primary use of photosynthesis
The process by which organisms make their own food from organic sources
The process by which organisms make their own food from inorganic sources
Primarily Mr. Allen tells us and we just believe
19
C(Claim)E(explain) R(reasoning)
●
Claim 10% of the energy is transferred to the next trophic level
●
Producer to consumer
●
Is it as simple as calories?
● All the biomass generated by primary producers is called gross primary
productivity. Net primary productivity is what is left over after the primary
producer has used the energy it needs for respiration. This is the portion
that is available to be consumed by the primary consumers and passed up
the food chain.

🔶 Select sudy plan from the main page.
🔶 Click on the SEV 1c.
🔶 Watch the Eutrophication video and answer the questions.
🔶 Complete the task.
🔶This is a graded assignment to complete.
🔶 Do not skip ahead. We will work on the other activities later
in the week.
✅ Give a green check when you are finished!
🔶 If you finish early open the practice and choose an activity

Keeping Track on
Human Impact
Human Impact Topic
Trawling
Trawling is when fishermen pull a big
net behind or next to the boat and
catch everything in front of the net.
There is a lot that is caught that dies
and is not the fish that the fishermen
wanted. This is called bycatch.
