1. Sensors
Used to measure the environment
3 features of automated systems
5
2. Microprocessor/CPU
Used to process the data from the sensors and determine if an action needs to be taken
3 features of automated systems
6
3. Actuators

7
Multiple Choice
What is an automated system?
A system or device that can perform or operated without human touch or interaction.
System that is used to control the operation of the computer
8
Open Ended
Type 3 features from automated system
9
Multiple Choice
What is the actuators do?
Create the movement from the process
Process the data from sensors
Measure the environment
10
Multiple Choice
What is the sensors do?
Create the movement from the process
Process the data from sensors
Measure the environment
11
Multiple Choice
What is the microprocessor do?
Create the movement from the process
Process the data from sensors
Measure the environment
12
The process in automated system
1. Sensors read the environment and send the data to microprocessor.
2. A converter change the data (analogue) from the sensor to data (digital) that can be read by microprocessor.
3. Microprocessor stored the data and process it. If the value is meet the stored range then it will send the signals
4. To the Actuator to perform the actions or movements.
13
Automated system Examples
Touch less Water Tap
a. The sensors will detect movement from the tap
b. If there is a movement, data will sent to microprocessor but through the converter (analogue to digital) if the data meets the stored value then microprocessor will send the signals to
c. Actuators to open the tab, and close the tap when the stored value meets
14
Automation in context
When evaluating the use of automation you can consider:
- Initial cost
- Running cost
- Safety
- Replacing people's jobs
- Continuous work all day every day
- Precision
15
Automation in context
Example in industry (Car manufacturing)
a. Initial cost: This will be high because the system (robots) need purchasing. The software will also need developing and could be expensive.
b. Running cost: This could be high for maintenance
c. Safety: It would be safer because they can monitor their environment and stop if there is any danger, whereas people can be. more accidents would happen
d. Replacing people's jobs: Jobs that the system made make the people losing the jobs
e. Continuos working all day every day: This would mean that more cars can be built
f. Precision: Human errors will not be made so there are less faulty cars.
