As readers, we regularly encounter unfamiliar words...
To determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, readers can puzzle out the meaning by breaking apart the word itself and/or hunting for clues in the surrounding text. Great readers always search for clues in sentences (and pictures!) before and after the word appears. Clues include:
Clues within the word: prefixes/suffixes/roots
Clues around the word: synonyms, antonyms, inferences, schema, pictures, captions, etc.
Clues about the word’s part of speech
If there are no useful context clues, or the context clues don’t provide enough information, readers should write a rough definition (if possible) and then check the definition in a dictionary. Readers should also double-check inferred definitions (even if there are ample context clues and they feel very confident) to make sure they understand all shades of a word.
6
MOOD
Lois Lowry uses language very deliberately in this text. Specific words and phrases are part of how Lowry develops setting—Jonas’ community uses some words that are different from the ones we use, which helps the reader understand that his community is similar in some ways, and different in other ways, from our own.
Mood and tone are all about emotion:
TONE: How is the speaker feeling?
MOOD:How is the reader feeling?
