Properties of Matter
Learning Target - I can identify the difference between a physical and chemical property as well as note if a chemical change has occurred.
Success Criteria - I will identify if a physical or chemical property is taking place as well as chemical changes by participating in a Blooket Review game.
S8P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the structure and properties of matter.

Multiple Choice
What is the stuff that makes up everything?
Matter
Energy
Gas
Space

How would you describe the word "property" in one to two words?
6
Word Cloud
List one example of a property or characteristic given in the video.
7
Physical Properties::
properties that can be observed directly or measured without changing the chemical identity of the substance
– Ex. Mass, volume, shape, size, color, luster, hardness, etc.
Properties of matter are like characteristics. By observing them and measuring them, we can use them to describe matter. There are two types of properties – physical and chemical.
Chemical Properties:
properties that can only be observed or measured by changing the chemical identity of a substance.
– By observing it a new substance is formed
- Ex. toxicity, flammability, combustibility, radioactivity, etc.

temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid
Melting Point
temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas
Boiling Point
10
a fluid’s resistance to flow
- A physical property only of liquids
- Can change with temperature
Think “how thick it is”
- Ex. Viscosity of syrup is high and of water is low
Viscosity
how well a solvent dissolves a solute
- Results in a solution
- Ex. Lemonade
Solubility
measure of compactness or consistency of a material
- Density does not ever change
- measured by dividing mass by volume.
Density

how easily a substance will set on fire
Ex. Burning charcoal
Combustibility
how easily a substance reacts, usually with an acid or base
- Ex. explosives; mixing baking soda and vinegar
Reactivity
how easily a substance reacts with oxygen
- Ex. Iron reacts with oxygen and moisture to create rust.
Oxidation

Physical & Chemical Changes
Matter can undergo both physical and chemical changes.
Physical Change: a change in a substance that only affects its physical properties
Ex. Cutting, coloring, crushing, melting, boiling, etc.
Chemical Change: a change in a substance that affects its chemical properties thus a chemical reaction occurs and a new substance is formed
Ex. Burning, rusting, decomposing, etc.
Chemical Reaction: process by which the atoms of one or more substances are rearranged to form different substances
16
States matter cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change forms.
Law of Conservation of Matter
17
Signs that a chemical change has occurred, resulting in a chemical reaction include:
Release of light
Temperature change
Odor change
Sudden color change
Gas given off
Sudden appearance of a solid (called a precipitate)
Evidence of a
