Cultura: La comida y los valores culturales

Cuando se habla de comida, se habla de diferencias culturales. En muchos países hispanos, la idea de comer mientras se maneja un automóvil es algo extraño. En estas culturas comer significa socializar, empezando por las comidas con la familia, tan importantes para muchos. Otras costumbres que reúnen a los amigos son la yerba mate en Argentina y Uruguay, o el tapeo en España. A continuación explicamos estas tradiciones.

La yerba mate

La yerba mate es una bebida que se consume mucho en Argentina y Uruguay y es de particular importancia social porque se comparte con los amigos. Implica tomar tiempo para salir del ajetreo de la vida. En Argentina es más común beberlo en una taza hecha con la piel de calabazas y con una bombilla. En Uruguay muchas personas prefieren llevar su mate en un termo y lo beben durante el día.

Una variante menos conocida del mate es el tereré, una bebida popular en Paraguay, en el norte de Argentina y en parte de Brasil. Desde 2010 el tereré es considerado patrimonio cultural de Paraguay, donde se bebe a todas horas y se acostumbra agregarle hierbas refrescantes o medicinales. En ese caso, se le conoce como “yuyo”, y lo venden las “yuyeras”, mujeres que caminan por las calles ofreciendo el té en sus diferentes versiones.

El tapeo

Las tapas son bocados o aperitivos que se sirven en los bares o restaurantes de España. Algunos ejemplos de alimentos que se sirven como tapas son mariscos, aceitunas y tortilla española. Las tapas se sirven para acompañar las bebidas alcohólicas, y el tapeo es la costumbre de ir de bar en bar con los amigos, bebiendo y comiendo tapas.

Hay muchas versiones acerca del origen de las tapas, algunas muy antiguas. Una versión dice que la tradición surgió para vender más porque las personas sienten sed cuando consumen comida salada, y por eso comprarán más bebidas. Otra explicación es que antes, hace mucho tiempo, en los bares o posadas se acostumbraba tapar las bebidas con un plato para protegerlas de los insectos, y en este plato se ponían pequeñas raciones de comida. Independientemente de su origen, en España el tapeo es de gran importancia cultural: es un momento para reunirse con los amigos.

Your essay should be between 10-15 sentences in Spanish. You must use ser, estar, and haber. You must also use the subjunctive mood and the indicative mood correctly.

If you would like to do a practice essay and have the teacher go over it, just type it up in a Google Doc and share it by no later than 7pm the night before the exam.

Practice Essay Topic

Imagine that you write an advice column for a magazine and have received an email from a reader that wants to start eating more healthfully, but is not sure how to go about it. Write a response to the reader.

Brainstorm a list of healthy eating habits. Include answers to the following questions: What should be reduced or eliminated from one’s diet? What should one eat more of? What kinds of food should one purchase?

Using the information you brainstormed, write an email to the reader giving him at least six suggestions as to how he might change his eating habits. Remember to use ser, estar, haber, and the subjunctive or indicative moods as necessary.
