CAMERA POLICY
Teachers will send a private message then verbal warning if a student’s camera is not on.
Continued non-camera use will result in moving up the discipline ladder.
First offense: Teacher conferences with student and documents in IC.
Second offense: Teacher conferences with student, contacts LC and documents in IC.
Third offense: Teacher conferences with student, contacts LC, sends over to academic
coach for support and documents in IC.
Fourth offense: Academic coach submits discipline referral to discipline AP
Please make sure to turn your camera on at the beginning of each class.
You can set it to private (only teacher sees) or public (everyone sees).

Weathering, erosion, and deposition
Weathering: breaking down of rock and land from wind, water, or other natural events.
Erosion: The movement of rock and land to a new place.
Deposition: The deposit, or putting down, the rock and land in a new place.
Weathering happens first, then erosion, then deposition.
7
Weathering
By wind: wind grinds against rocks, slowly wearing them down.
By water: water grinds agains rocks, slowly wearing them down.
By ice: water travels into cracks in the rock. It then freezes, and expands, and then melts. This process happens over and over again, eventually breaking the rock a part.
By gravity: rocks fall and split, or fall on each other.
By living things: Animals can break down rock, humans can as well. Even plants with roots can effect rocks.
8
Open Ended
What is one reason why rocks get weathered?
9
Erosion
The movement of rock and land to a new place.
Many things that cause weathering, also cause erosion.
Wind can carry small rock particles from a cliff to a new place.
Water can carry small sediment (bits of rock and land) to a new place.
Ice in a glacier can break off rock and carry it to a new place.
Human beings: cutting trees down would allow the soil to wash away more easily. Less trees means less vegetation, means animals won't eat, and it could start a really scary cycle!!!

Standard
SEV4. Obtain, evaluate, and
communicate information to analyze
human impact on
natural resources.
b. Design, evaluate, and refine
solutions to reduce human impact on
the environment including,
but not limited to, smog, ozone
depletion, urbanization, and ocean
acidification.
I can explain ways humans could
reduce their impact on air quality.
I can describe ways humans can
help reduce the causes and
consequences of global warming.
Learning Targets
15
This material will be divided to three main areas
land
How do
humans
effect the
land we live
on
Air
How do
humans
effect the air
we breath
water
How do
humans
affect the
water we use
16
The human impacts we will study
Agriculture
Crops,
and
livestock
industrial
Power
plants and
factories
Waste water
treatment
Clean
Water is
essential
17
Why manage waste?
To conserve resources and energy
Reduce water and air pollution
Saves Landfill space
18
1. Reduction
Preferred Method
Goal is to reduce the amount of waste at the source and reusing waste to have less waste being collected
Purchasing items with less packaging
Avoid disposable products
Compost food scraps to reduce waste
19
Let's do one together
●greenhouse gas is the term
●Where do we put the term?
●What is the definition?
●Do you know any examples?
●What would a characteristic
be?.
20
Open Ended
What are the Environmental, Economic and social benefits to this method?
21
Labelling
greenhouse gas cheese maze: starting with the term, definition, characterisitcs, and example
by absorbing reflected infrared rays
green house gas
gases in the atmosphere that trap heat
Carbon dioxide(emissions_
22
2. Reuse
Reduce waste by reusing products instead of throwing them away
Repair, sell or donate items
Items such as reusable bags, metal spoons and washable plates
23
How do human activities impact
land?
What can be done to improve air quality?
24
3. Recycle
Producing new materials from waste materials
This process uses less energy and materials than creating new materials
Reduces the amount of waste in Landfills
Requires collection, processing and remanufacturing
EPA claims more than 75% of American waste is recyclable, but only 30% is actually recycled
25
The hotter the
temperature, the
deeper the coal is
buried, and the
longer the amount
of time the coal is
buried, the more
efficient coal you
get.
Peat
Lignite
Bituminous
coal
Anthracite
26
Draw
Draw what items can be recycled.
27
Coal
steam
propels
turbine
burned to
heat
water
Electricity
burned for heat
• Coal is cheap and there is lots of it!
• When coal is are burnt it releases carbon
dioxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen
dioxide into the atmosphere contributing
to global warming and acid rain.
• Coal mining is harmful to the environment
and mine workers – toxic dust, cave-ins
and explosions.
28
4. Recovery
Converting waste to energy
Burn waste to create energy
PRO: Reduces waste
CONS: Creates ash, Not everything can be burned (rubber tires), High environmental and economic cost
29
Remind me… What is the greenhouse effect?
30
5. Disposal
Disposal of waste in a Landfill
Creates Leachate; the breakdown of waste with the addition of rainwater
Creates harmful gases: Methane and Carbon Dioxide
Not properly managed
Leads to Environmental damage such as poor soil and drinking water
31
Which of these surprise you the most?
32
Air Pollution
Look at real-time air
quality around the world.
Where is it good?
Where is the air
dangerous?
What do you think is
contributing to that?
Move your mouse over
the indicators to find out
more.
33
Multiple Choice
What keeps counries using fosil fuels?
a. help developing countries increase their energy access and lift millions out of poverty
b. help countries use renewable resources kkeping the world clean.
Keep ahead and develop new ways with technology to access energy
D. saving ecosystems from eutriphication
34
Burning fossil fuels leads to an increase in _______
_______, a greenhouse gas contributes to air
pollution and climate change,
Carbon Monoxide
Carbon Dioxide
Hydrogen Dioxide
Calcium Carbonate
35
Burning fossil fuels leads to an increase in _______
_______, a greenhouse gas contributes to air
pollution and climate change,
Carbon Dioxide
36
What can we do?
● Limit the amount of pollutants that make it into the air
○Scrubbers - used to remove pollutants from industrial exhaust
○Catalytic Converters - filters out harmful byproducts in vehicle exhaust
● Pass laws to lower air pollution
○Clean Air Act
○Environmental Protection Agency
● Using less fossil fuels or products that cause air pollution
