SEV4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to
analyze human impact on natural resources.

c. Construct an argument to evaluate how human population

growth affects food demand and food supply (GMOs,
monocultures, desertification, Green Revolution).

1. I can describe the characteristics or trends of
human population growth (past, present & future).
2. I can predict how human population growth
affects food demand and food supply.
3. I can define the terms GMO and Green
Revolution and can explain their environmental
impacts.

What is the green revolution

The Green Revolution was a movement throughout the world to increase crop production. It also strengthened local economies and decreased poverty.

Green Revolution & Mexico

• Great increase in production of food grains

(especially wheat and rice) that resulted from
the introduction of new, high-yielding
varieties into developing countries

• Began in the 1940s when the Rockefeller

Foundation launched a research project to
help improve agricultural yields in Mexico
with wheat.

• With the new wheat and the use of

mechanization, Mexico was able to produce
more wheat than was needed by its own
citizens and it exported wheat by the 1960s.

• Before this, the country was importing almost

half of its wheat supply

(1) increased area under farming,

(2) double-cropping, which includes planting two crops rather than one, annually,
(3) adoption of HYV of seeds,

(4) highly increased use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides,

4 advances from the green revolution

15

media

The Green Revolution

• A period when the productivity of

global agriculture increased
drastically as a result of new
advances

• Helped produce more food &

prevented starvation for many people

• Resulted in lower production costs &

sale prices of produce

• New chemical fertilizers, herbicides

& pesticides were created, which
increased crop yield

• Increased the use of mechanization,

GMOs, & irrigation

What are GMOs?

• A GMO, or genetically modified

organism, is a plant, animal,
microorganism or other organism whose
genetic makeup has been modified in a
laboratory using genetic engineering.

• This creates combinations genes that do

not occur in nature or through traditional
crossbreeding methods.

• Most animals that are GMOs are

produced for use in lab research as
“models” to study the function of specific
genes & how the genes relate to health &
disease.

• Approximately 90% of the corn, soybeans,

& sugar beets on the market are GMOs.

• Genetically engineered crops produce

higher yields, have a longer shelf life, are
resistant to diseases & pests.

25

media

One of the biggest draws for
widespread adoption of
GMO crops is pest
resistance.

According to the World
Health Organization, one of
the most widely used
methods for incorporating
pest resistance into plants is
through a bacterium that
produces proteins that repel
insects, reducing the need
for wide-scale spraying of
synthetic pesticides.

Two Truths & a Lie – GMOs!!!

Transgenic livestock are produced with extra copies

of growth hormone genes to allow them to grow faster
and produce meat that is low in fat.

One risk associated with using GMO crops is that

these crops may cause a decrease of allergic reactions
in humans.

Scientists produce new genetic variations not

found in nature by causing mutations with chemicals or
radiation.

Multiple Choice

The health effects of toxic substances and hazardous wastes are not yet fully understood. Research to better understand how these exposures may impact health is ongoing. Meanwhile, efforts to reduce exposures continue. Reducing exposure to toxic substances and hazardous wastes is fundamental to environmental health. One way you can help reduce toxins in the environment is to

Responses

1

use only lead free gasoline

2

use rechargeable batteries and recycle the waste

3

reduce the amount of water you consume and tell others to not drink water
