Diluting Solutions
"Stock solutions" can be diluted to create less concentrated "working solutions"
2
Simple Dilutions
Simple dilutions follow a ratio of solute to solution.
For example, a 1:15 dilution means 1 unit of solute to 15 units of solution. (Therefore, 14 units of solvent.)
To make 5L of a 1:15 solution of bleach in water, simply multiply the volume needed by the dilution factor written as a fraction.
5L x (1/15) = 0.33L or 333mL
3
Complex Dilutions: C1V1 = C2V2
Memorize it.
Concentration units can be anything (M, %, density), but they must be consistent within one dilution.
Volume units must also be consistent.
If you need to change volume units, do it after the calculation.

Sample Problem
Your stock solution is 1M glucose and you need 100mL of 0.1 glucose solution. How much stock solution should you use? How would you prepare the working solution?
1M x V1 = 0.1M x 100 mL, so V1 = 10 mL
Add 10 mL of stock solution to 90 mL of water to make your working solution.
5
Math Response
You have a 100X stock solution of buffer and want to make 100mL of a 1x buffer. How much stock solution will you use to make this solution?
6
Math Response
You have a 100X stock solution of buffer and want to make 100mL of a 1x buffer. How much water will you use to make this solution?
7
Math Response
You have a stock solution of 5M HCl and wish to make 50mL of 1M working solution. How much of the stock solution will you need?
8
Math Response
You have a stock solution of 5M HCl and wish to make 50mL of 1M working solution. How much water will you need?

"Do what you oughta,
add acid to water."
Acid plus water releases heat.
A small amount of acid added to water allows water to absorb the heat slowly.
Adding a little water to alot of acid will cause quick boiling and splattering.
