the flow of energy and cycling of matter within an ecosystem. a.
Develop and use a model to compare and analyze the levels of
biological organization including organisms, populations,
communities, ecosystems, and biosphere. ).

1. I can describe the level of biological heirarchy.
2. I can predict how an ecosystem will recover from
a natural disaster.
3. I can define the effects of volcanic activity.

volcanic Ash

Ash is gritty, abrasive, sometimes corrosive, and always
unpleasant. Small ash particles can abrade (scratch) the
front of the eye. Ash particles may contain crystalline silica,
a material that causes a respiratory disease called silicosis.

8

media

Release of greenhouse gases

heavy gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide
can collect in low-lying areas. The most common volcanic
gas is water vapor, followed by carbon dioxide and sulfur
dioxide.

Sulfur dioxide can cause breathing problems in both
healthy people and people with asthma and other
respiratory problems.

9

media

Pyroclastic flow

With rock fragments ranging in size from ash to boulders that
travel across the ground at speeds typically greater than 80 km per
hour (50 mph),

pyroclastic flows knock down, shatter, bury or carry away nearly all
objects and structures in their path.

Climate change

Several eruptions during the past century have caused a decline in the
average temperature at the Earth's surface of up to half a degree
(Fahrenheit scale) for periods of one to three years.

13

Drag and Drop

The
eruption of Mount Pinatubo on June 15, 1991, was one of the largest
of the twentieth century and injected a 20-million ton (metric scale) sulfur dioxide
into the stratosphere at an altitude of more than 20 miles. Consequently, it was a standout in its climate impact and
the Earth's surface for
years following the eruption, by as much as 1.3 degrees F at the height of the impact.
