Rebirth of the Arts
The word “Renaissance” means rebirth. This was a “rebirth” for Europe from the Medieval period (dark ages) to a time of learning and creativity.
It was a time of artistic creativity, as well as political, social,
economic, and cultural changes.
It reawakened interest in classical learning especially about
Ancient Greece and Rome. This rebirth of classical learning led to a movement of great creativity in the arts, writing, and thinking.

In the 1300’s, a revolution began to brew in
Europe. But this revolution didn’t involve weapons and war. This was a movement of ideas. People decided they wanted to enjoy life on Earth - and not just look forward to their reward in Heaven. They focused on the individual and believed every person had unlimited possibilities.
This was the exact opposite of what the Church had taught in the Medieval period. The Church taught that you should suffer in this life so you can have a better life in Heaven.
This new revolutionary idea was called Humanism and it led to a rebirth of the arts and learning.

Italy & the Medici Family
Italy was a collection of different “city-states” and not one unified country. Each city-state was led by a powerful and wealthy merchant class. Italy was at the crossroads of all trade routes between Europe and Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and Africa and the merchants made lots of money off that trade.
The Merchant class became patrons (financial supporters) of the Arts. This allowed the Renaissance to flourish. Florence was the capital of the Italian Renaissance and the family who made the Renaissance happen was the Medici family. They were wealthy bankers and business owners who used lots of their money to commission (or pay) artists to make art that were seen by the public. They also controlled the government of Florence for 300 years.
