Tik Tok’s Influence on Students

This upsurge in anti semitism among the younger
generations is driving an overall jump in antisemitic
attitudes. In 2014, our study found that only 9 percent
of Americans harbored extensive antisemitic views
(that is six of the 11 attitudes we tested); that jumped to
20 percent in 2022. Today, that figure stands at 24
percent. When nearly one in four hold intolerant
attitudes toward Jews, antisemitism can no longer be
considered a fringe belief. What we are witnessing is a
normalization of anti semitism across society. (Time
Magazine)

In ADL’s most recent survey, however, we
found this trend has reversed. When asked the
extent to which they agree with 11 different,
classic anti-Jewish tropes, Millennials now led
the way, harboring the most antisemitic views,
with belief in 5.37 different tropes on average,
followed by members of Gen Z at 5.01. These
youngest generations now outpace Gen X, at
4.19, and the Baby Boomers, at 3.06. Such
tropes include allegations of dual loyalty,
conspiracies about Jewish control of the media
and Wall Street, or beliefs that Jews are insular
or irritating. (Time Magazine)

Criticism of Tik Tok

Criticism of TikTok flared after the results of a survey went viral in November, suggesting that for every 30 minutes that someone watches videos on the platform, they became 17% more antisemitic.

In the case of Tik Tok, condemnation has tended to center on TikTok Chinese ownership, which is perhaps unsurprising given that many American politicians view China as an enemy, combined with the fact that since October 7, antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment have become rampant on the Chinese internet and in state-run media. TikTok is also a special case in that it is not publicly traded unlike Meta, YouTube, or Snapchat — meaning there are fewer avenues for shareholder engagement.

Conservative commentator Jonah Goldberg argued in a column that there’s a relationship between the type of content that is popular on TikTok and China’s interests in its power struggle with the United States. (The Times of Israel, opinion article)

“China’s fomenting hatred of Israel and Jews appears to be a useful distraction from its own sins and a way to pander to, and encourage, global antisemitism and anti-Americanism,” Goldberg wrote.

Tik Tok: To Ban or Not Pro’s and Con’s

Pros

1)

TikTok poses a threat to U.S. national
security, serving as a propaganda arm of the Chinese Communist Party.

2)

TikTok is rife with dangerous
misinformation that the government
can and should rightly ban.

3)

A “tough on China” approach is
needed to safeguard the United States
and its citizens.

Cons

1)

TikTok is no more a threat than
American-owned social media sites
that collect and sell user data.

2)

TikTok has no more dangerous
information than other social media
sites, and attempts to ban it are
unconstitutional.

3)

Singling out China and TikTok for
recriminations is xenophobic and
rank political theater.
